Basic safety principles for elevators
The installation, maintenance, repair and modernization of lifts are activities that are associated with risks. To reduce these risks and promote a safe working environment, it is important that workers follow specific safety principles and working methods. This European Lift Association (ELA) brochure ”Basic safety principles for lifts” describes general and specific safety principles that must always be followed.
The brochure is designed and primarily aimed at lift companies that carry out installation, maintenance, repair and modernisation work. These companies have a legal obligation and responsibility to protect their employees from risks that may arise in connection with the performance of work on lifts. The brochure provides guidance by showing examples of ways to protect themselves, which, if implemented correctly, will contribute to achieving the best protection for employees of lift companies and subcontractors.
It is the elevator company that is responsible for identifying, interpreting and complying with all applicable requirements and regulations, whether they are local, regional, national or at EU level.
The brochure is also aimed at employees in the elevator industry. Employees have a responsibility to follow the applicable safety procedures and to use the protective equipment provided by the company. This brochure will make it easier for the employee to understand the risks and, where necessary, request additional protective equipment from the company.
The safety procedures are largely based on common sense. They are based on many years of experience with accidents, some of which are very serious and fatal.
Some of the safety procedures are particularly important: these are: crucial rules. These rules are very crucial to avoid fatal accidents. Failure to follow them can lead to very serious accidents or fatalities.
