New factsheet: Accessibility for all

The Swedish Elevator Association is an ambassador for accessibility issues and the importance of our built environments in Sweden being safe and accessible. Homes and public buildings should be usable by everyone regardless of ability. This includes families with children with strollers, those who use wheelchairs or walkers, and those who have impaired vision or hearing.

According to the Discrimination Act, it is discrimination to fail to make reasonable adjustments that are necessary to enable people with disabilities to participate on equal terms. The requirement to adjust also applies to property owners and tenant-owner associations to a certain extent.

Easily remedied obstacles or need for modernization?

The elevator, just like the ventilation system, laundry room and heating system, has a limited lifespan. After years of use, it needs to be modernized to ensure operational reliability and extend its lifespan. Modernizing the elevator is also a good opportunity to increase accessibility in the property. For many residents, the elevator is not just a convenience, but a necessity that makes the difference between independent living and feeling trapped in their home. Even small improvements can make a big difference.
