The Swedish Elevator Association in the TV4 news about the retroactive safety requirement

Last night, the Swedish Elevator Association's Secretary General Sara Berggren appeared on TV4 news to talk about elevator safety and the retroactive safety requirement for elevators with a dangerous gap between the inner car door and the outer shaft door. The decision on this new legal requirement followed the tragic accident when a 5-year-old boy died in 2023.

The retroactive safety requirements must be met by 2031, but the Swedish Elevator Association urges property owners not to wait to update the safety of these approximately 6,000 elevators that are covered.

Sweden has Europe's oldest elevator stock and a regulatory framework for elevators in residential buildings that lags behind. There are another 20,000 older elevators with serious safety risks, but the government has not yet made a decision on these. The Swedish Elevator Association's assessment is that current legislation is not sufficient. Awareness that the responsibility lies with property owners is too low and they need support from legislators to prioritize these issues.
